Learning to See & The Three Energies
Before you can build differently, you have to see differently. This is the shift the whole masterclass rests on: from a wooden box full of parts to one connected system, where a small change cascades through everything else. That’s why it’s called Atomic Lutherie. By the end of this session you have the map. The rest of the course is learning to use it.
Structural Energy: The Foundation
Then we put a real blueprint on the table and go to work. I walk the whole guitar from headstock to tail block, component by component, showing you where structural energy pools, leaks, and quietly breaks things, and what I’d change. If the structure isn’t sound, nothing else matters. You can’t shape a signal that’s being swallowed by a failing foundation.
Vibrational Energy: The Voice
We go back through the same blueprint again, this time following the vibrational energy, the signal that becomes the voice. Scale length, the bridge, coupling, the soundboard, the back, the air inside the box. The guitar becomes a signal chain with a control panel you get to operate. Same guitar, same drawing, a completely different set of things to see.
Emotional Energy: The Maker
At some point, you get the techniques. Then the resistance you hit isn’t technical anymore. It’s fear, comparison, and perfectionism. Those are stress concentration points too, and they affect your work the same way a weak joint does. In the final session we do the mapping one more time, except this time the blueprint is you. It’s the session that stayed with people the most.
Cremona, Italy is where Stradivari built his violins, and three centuries later it’s still the heart of our craft. Over the years, the festival there has invited some of the world’s top luthiers to teach masterclasses, builders like John Monteleone, Linda Manzer, and others.
In 2025, they invited me. Fifteen years earlier, I’d shared a booth with Monteleone at that same festival, watched him teach, and never dreamed I’d one day be asked to do the same.
I didn’t want to teach another set of tricks and techniques. I wanted to bring the thing underneath everything I do at the bench, and preparing for that class is what finally forced thirty years of intuition into words.
Then I brought it home and taught it live, over four sessions, to a group of Luthier’s EDGE members. Those sessions became this course, and what happened in them is the reason this page exists.
People started seeing their guitars differently. They asked questions I’d never heard builders ask. They stopped hunting for the one secret bracing pattern and started understanding what their own choices were doing. And the session I was most nervous to teach turned out to be the one that stayed with everyone the most.
Every course in the EDGE goes deep into its own part of the craft.
This masterclass gives you the foundation that connects them all.
That’s why it belongs underneath everything else in the school, and it’s why everything else makes more sense once you have it.
The sessions are self-paced, so you can move through them on your own schedule. But you won’t be doing it alone.
The course is connected to its own dedicated community group inside the EDGE, where the homework gets shared, questions get answered, and you’ll watch other builders work through the exact thing you’re stuck on.
Each session ends with homework, the same mapping done on your own blueprint, and you’ll get feedback from me and the group as you go. Complete all four sessions and the final exam, and there’s a certificate with your name on it.
And whether it’s your first guitar or your fiftieth, the framework meets you where you are. If you’re starting out, it compresses a learning curve that took me three decades. If you’ve been at this a long time, it gives you the thing experience alone doesn’t: the ability to explain why your good guitars are good, so you can do it on purpose.
By the time you finish, you won’t be able to look at a guitar the same way again.
